Day by day we humans are developing new unhealthy lifestyles. The most obvious one is alcoholic habits. This is the oldest and unwelcome habit of humans. Chemical containing packed food items, cold drinks, zero physical activity, and all this leading to stress and other mental problems. Give your body a boost and refreshment from the failed metabolic system that you have developed. So, I am here to tell you some ways to detoxify your body. Repeat these instructions at least once a week. You will feel a new energy in the body.
What is detoxification?
According to Ayurveda, detoxification is the process of resting, cleansing, and nourishing the body. By removing and eliminating toxins, then feeding your body with healthy nutrients, detoxifying can help protect you from disease and renew the ability to maintain optimal health through a variety of methods including yoga.
When do you need detoxification?
Here are some symptoms in which you can try detoxification-
- Unreasoned tiredness
- Slow elimination
- Itchy skin
- Low-grade infection
- Puffy eyes or bags under the eyes
- Menstrual problems
- Mental confusion
How to detoxify your body ?
1. Herbal Drinks
Let’s start with how you will get some instant freshness. Herbs are great if used precisely. Herbal drinks are a quick source of energy and refreshment. Not all herbal drinks taste bad, it is just a misconception. There are many amazing tasting herbs like mint which most of you are familiar with. You can have an immunity booster with Tulsi (Basil) based drinks. Herbal teas are very rich in antioxidants.
What are antioxidants?
In the process of releasing energy from food, our body produces some reactive unwanted substances, called radicals. Antioxidants help decrease these radicals and maintain the stability of your body.
2. Get a good sleep
In our daily schedule, most of us nowadays are unable to get a sound sleep. So, take leave. Postpone all parties, ceremonies, meetings, etc. and just sleep. The best part is that it does not take any effort. While sleeping our metabolic processes slow down but your excretory system maintains its flow of work. This means that fewer waste materials are being produced and these waste materials are being eliminated at a constant speed. While sleeping your body also heals, relaxes eyes, and reduces stress. I would suggest having a cool temperature in the room in which you are sleeping so that you do not wake up in between due to heat and sweat.
3. Drink water when you wake up
We sleep for long hours. The only source of water for the body at this time is water produced during respiration which is not enough. So, our body remains in keen need of water when you are asleep, so the first thing you need to do when you wake up is to drink a glass full of water. This water according to biologists gets absorbed very quickly by our cells and you can feel it when you will try this. Under a minute or so after drinking water when you wake up, you will feel the boost in your energy and also some excitement. The feeling of excitement is due to some hormonal changes.
But why would you do this for detoxification?
Well, it is quite obvious. An adequate amount of water is essential as water serves as the medium of transport for toxins, maintains sugar level, and decreases the chance of kidney stones. If you have been drinking recently then it is a must for you to stay hydrated all day. Because alcohol dehydrates your cells.
4. Avoid Alcohol
Apart from the more harmful effects of alcohol, the most common effect is weight gain. The reason behind this is that alcohol is treated as a toxin in our body. So, our body prioritizes the metabolic activity of the alcohol first and the rest of the calories from food do not get used and stored for future use by the body. It causes harm to the liver. It takes almost a week for your body from the damage caused by alcohol. So, at least avoid alcohol for a week when you are trying to detox your body.
5. Cardio and strength exercises
The best way to remove the inactive feeling is exercise. Cardio exercises not only improve your heart health but also increases oxygen intake and its transfer in the body. But with extensive cardio exercises only you will not only lose the accommodated fat but also the muscles as well. So you need to train accordingly with a mixture of cardio exercises like running, jumping, etc. and strength exercises like push-ups, crunches, etc.
So, how does this help detoxify your body?
As I discussed exercise increases oxygen supply in our body which thereby increases the efficiency of our cells. This decreases the number of side products which get produced in anaerobic respiration.
6. Do Yoga and take stretch breaks
Every morning or in the evening or both, with an empty stomach, perform yoga. Yoga increases flexibility, increases immunity, increases lungs’ health and many more. How yoga benefits in detoxification?
Due to less flexibility of the body, blood sometimes does not reach certain parts of the body in an adequate amount. Yoga increases your blood flow by increasing flexibility and breathing exercises, hence helps detoxify your body.
Take a break once an hour, even if only for five minutes, to stretch and move around. This will improve blood circulation through the muscles, and get your heart rate up. This also decreases fatigue and burns calories.
7. Eat Healthy Food
Supply your body with essential micronutrients (i.e. vitamins and minerals) and avoid fatty food and sugar. Avoid non-veg except milk for a week while you are detoxing. For proper cleaning of your gut, you need to eat fibre rich food. Therefore, ideally, you need to eat a lot of vegetables, bread, rice and spices(except the hot ones). Do not panic though. You can cheat a little bit. But, the unhealthy items should not exceed 20% of your daily intake. Make mindful choices and your detox will be a success.
